Climate change report: Watch out Mumbai and Miami

A new climate change report says parts of Mumbai, India, could become uninhabitable from floods, storms and rising seas. Other coastal ciies, such as Miami, are also at risk from rising seas.

Global warming is leading to such severe storms, droughts and heat waves that nations should prepare for an unprecedented onslaught of deadly and costly weather disasters, an international panel of climate scientists says in a report issued Wednesday.

The greatest danger from extreme weather is in highly populated, poor regions of the world, the report warns, but no corner of the globe ? from Mumbai to Miami ? is immune. The document by a Nobel Prize-winning panel of climate scientists forecasts stronger tropical cyclones and more frequent heat waves, deluges and droughts.

The 594-page report by? Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change? (IPCC) blames the scale of recent and future disasters on a combination of man-made climate change, population shifts and poverty.

"We mostly experience weather and climate through the extreme," said Stanford University climate scientist Chris Field, who is one of the report's top editors. "That's where we have the losses. That's where we have the insurance payments. That's where things have the potential to fall apart.

"There are lots of places that are already marginal for one reason or another," Field said. But it's not just poor areas: "There is disaster risk almost everywhere."

The scientists say that some places, particularly parts of Mumbai in India, could become uninhabitable from floods, storms and rising seas. In 2005, over 24 hours nearly 3 feet of rain fell on the city, killing more than 1,000 people and causing massive damage. Roughly 2.7 million people live in areas at risk of flooding.

First the leaked product shots, then the Mr. Blurrycam pictures, and now the real deal in our own hands! When we spotted this upcoming T-Mobile MyTouch slider, we just so happened to be chilling out at Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen where the phone was displayed as the Ascend G312 QWERTY, or "Buddy" according to the "About phone" info ("MyTouch Buddy"?). We didn't see the non-QWERTY variant, but judging by the name, we don't doubt that there's also an Ascend G312 lurking somewhere.

Anyhow, this new MyTouch packs a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255T chip, a 4-inch WVGA screen, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage and microSD expansion, along with features like DLNA connectivity and five-second fast boot. As for image capturing you get a 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera plus a five-megapixel main camera (with 720p recording) on the back, and you'll find a handy camera button at the usual place as well. Interestingly, the spec sheet listed Ice Cream Sandwich while the demo unit was only running on Android 2.3.6, so we'll probably need to wait for T-Mobile's final say on this end.

During our quick hands-on we were pretty satisfied by the phone's overall build quality, especially with its spring-loaded sliding mechanism and keyboard feedback. The screen isn't the best in class when it comes to viewing angle and contrast, but bearing in mind that this phone comes with a Snapdragon S2 processor, we expect it to be priced almost as sensibly as LG's MyTouch handsets -- stay tuned for the official announcement, of course. Court won't reconsider bone marrow payments ruling

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A federal appeals court on Tuesday declined to reconsider a ruling that allows bone marrow donors to be paid for their donations like blood donors.

In December, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals shook up the organ transplant community when it overturned the criminality of paying bone marrow donors. Previously, donating bone marrow was classified the same as donating a kidney or any other organ, and payments were forbidden, punished by jail time.

But the court said a technological breakthrough makes the process of donating bone marrow nearly identical to giving blood plasma and doesn't amount to an organ transplant.

On Tuesday, the 9th Circuit declined the Obama administration's request to reconsider the ruling. Several organizations and activisits in the organ-donation community have urged the administration to fight the ruling.

The administration now has 90 days to petition the U.S. Supreme Court.

Department of Justice spokesman Charles Miller said the administration is reviewing its options.

The nonprofit patient advocacy group Institute for Justice called the original ruling a "major national shift in bone marrow donation policy" and said payments will encourage more donations.

Viral Videos and Infectious Disease-Healing in Northern Uganda

Invisible Children?s video, Kony 2012 recently went viral with over 100 million views, earning both praise and criticism from Ugandans. A vast amount of complexity surrounds the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), and it has been suggested to use the attention as a platform to raise awareness about another issue in the region, Nodding disease. It seems relevant to move the discussion forward by examining the different healing approaches Ugandans have used regarding the LRA and Nodding disease.

It is impossible to give a singular explanation or cause for a war but a useful starting point (pdf) is to understand the socio-political environment within which the LRA emerged. The LRA?s origins in northern Uganda can be traced back to when Museveni seized power from General Tito Okello Lutwa in 1986. At the time, the Acholi population within northern Uganda believed Museveni?s power could lead to their persecution.

Spirituality is an important component of Acholi culture and Alice Auma Lakwena?s formation of the Holy Spirit Movement (HSM) reflected both their political and religious sentiment. Although it received tremendous support from the Acholi population, the HSM was defeated in 1987. Following their loss, Joseph Kony also claimed to possess spiritual powers and formed the LRA. However, his claims were rejected by the community and its leaders. Since then, Kony has manipulated the interpretation of traditional Acholi spiritual beliefs and also used Biblical verses out of context to justify violence towards his opposition.

As with others who have distorted religion to incite violence, Kony is often depicted as a one-dimensional madman. Yet, the LRA has secured strategic partnerships with militia opposition to Uganda?s government and managed to sustain itself for over 25 years. Joseph Kony presently remains at large with the LRA continuing its operations in the Central African Republic, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Different strategies aimed at his capture have been ongoing; from action kits aimed at raising awareness to government intervention, debate surrounds as to whether these efforts do more harm than good. While the LRA?s origins may be entrenched in mysticism, critics contend it is Invisible Children?s narrative that is consumed with magic.

Calm After The Storm: Uganda has transitioned into an area of peace

The majority of the current attention has been focused Kony; however, he is not the sole perpetrator of crimes committed. Even if the efforts to capture Kony are successful, the loss of a leader doesn?t necessarily signify an end to the problems. Instead, it marks the beginning to a new set of questions and issues. As history has demonstrated throughout Africa and other parts of the world, the prosecution of war criminals is complex, invoking passion and differing beliefs on the best way to move forward.

Since former combatants have been returning to the region for years, there has been a continuous effort to determine the appropriate course of action. Within Uganda, both international and traditional Acholi methods of justice have been used in the region. Some traditional methods include compensation and ceremonies such as mato oput, a tradition involving drinking bitter herb and nyouo tong gweno, in which an egg is stepped on to symbolize a new beginning. These are believed to benefit the victim, the perpetrator and the community.

Making Peace With The Past: No longer focused on survival, Ugandans decide how to move forward

Both international and traditional models of justice have their strengths and weaknesses (pdf). International models have been critiqued for focusing solely on punishment while excluding education and rehabilitation; both are also important components of restoration in Acholi culture. However, traditional Acholi methods aren?t without flaws, either. For example, compensation becomes difficult when an individual is simultaneously a perpetrator and victim. Further, poverty and limited resources has resulted in an inability to procure materials necessary to perform certain rituals. This is a reminder that through devastation, tradition can become another casualty of war.

Indiscriminate Victims: Nodding disease has also claimed children as fatalities in northern Uganda

Nodding disease also has affected children in the some of the same regions as the LRA. A large amount of uncertainty surrounds the disease. It is thought to have originated in the 1960s in Tanzania. Although a black-fly-borne parasite that causes river blindness has also been present in all of the areas where outbreaks have occurred, it is also unclear what causes it.

The disease affects children aged 5 though 15 and is named for the head nodding that occurs during seizures-like episodes. The seizures can be triggered by food or a shift in temperature. Nodding disease can stunt growth, cause mental retardation, and is often fatal. There is no known cure, although anti-epileptic medication may be effective in treatment.

When the source and treatment are unknown, fear and stigma can surround a disease. Much like the myths surrounding HIV, Nodding disease has been attributed to supernatural causes such as witchcraft and curses. When faced with the challenge of treating of Nodding disease, Ugandans have used both medical doctors and traditional healers. Some might seek help from a hospital first; if that is unsuccessful they may turn to traditional medicine as an alternative. Others use traditional medicine as a primary source of care as it is sometimes more accepted and accessible.

Deep Rooted Knowledge? Indigenous herbs and plants are often incorporated into traditional healing

Approximately 80 percent of Ugandans rely on traditional medicine. Although there is a tendency to dismiss traditional medicine as snake oils, there have been efforts made to regulate and standardize (pdf) the use of herbal medicine within Uganda. The field of traditional medicine and indigenous knowledge has been recognized and explored by researchers and organizations including the World Health Organization and The World Bank. While traditional healers are seen as integral to local culture within Uganda, the potential value of its application for Nodding disease is unknown.

As anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski noted, magic is to be expected and generally to be found whenever man comes to an unbridgeable gap, a hiatus in his knowledge or in his powers of practical control, and yet has to continue in his pursuit. The causes of war and disease do not stem from magic, nor will they be solved by a magic bullet or magic pill. Instead, the process of healing can be advanced by fully understanding an issue?s origins and the environment that sustains it.

My Infertility, Adoption and Foster Care Blog: Getting Ready for a ...

We are on placement #7 and I finally feel a little more calm and organized about a placements arrival. Don?t get me wrong, it is still an adrenalin rush and a you?re in a hurry to get stuff ready! This time we had about a days notice. Same with when we got Chandler (and Madison and Isaac). With Emma and Joey it was 45 minutes to an hour, Crazy! This is my list for when I know a placement Is coming, so I at least know the age and sex to prepare for.

So here is my new finagled check list for getting ready:

Kids room:
bed ready- make sure crib/ toddler bed is set up for age appropriate child.
Check bedding- When we started foster care we bought everything for a little one our selves (duh, no baby shower or anything). We got a gender neutral bedding set, but it is a little on the boy-ish side. When we found out we would be adopting Emma my family threw me a shower. They were awesome and got me a pink and brown set I wanted! So when we have a boy I use the ?Little Pond? set and when we have a girl I pull out my ?Emma Set?, that is actually the name of the bedding set!
Other stuff- check to make sure all outlets are plugged, night light on, trash can and hamper ready, toys and such out? Our house is drafty so we make sure a space heater is on too.

Clothes:
Sometimes clothes and diapers are hard to plan before the child arrives because you don?t know the exact size you will need. Generally I pull out all the clothes I have for the age of the child and go from there. Either they fit and I?m ready, or they are too big/ too small. It?s a shot in the dark. Obviously if you are getting them from another home these are great things to ask and find out about before the child comes.
Which Chandler we had to go to our local DI before even coming home because he came with nothing and we didn?t have much in his size! Another thing I discovered with Chandler, FREECYCLE! Have you heard of it? I know some cities are on Freecycle.org. Ours is a Yahoo Group you can join. The way it works is you post if you have items you are giving away for free or ask for something you need/ want for free! Kinda awesome, hun? But, be careful you don?t brake confidentiality policies while posting! I?ve heard of people posting on Craigslist (another great site to use) things like, ?I need clothes for our 5 and 8 year old foster sons.? No, no, no! How did I do it? I just casually asked for boys clothes in his size. People don?t need to know that the child is in foster care! If someone asks, say it is your sister?s kid or something! I got more clothes then we needed from a lady in town all for FREE!!!! Our town also just started a group on Facebook where people post stuff for sale, free stuff or things they are looking for, also amazing!

Car ready: Do you have the proper car seat/ booster seat ready?

House ready: I did a mad rush cleaning the night before Dora came! I vacuumed the whole house, emptied all the trash cans, dusted, make sure all dishes were washed, did ALL the laundry and so on. Now, my thinking on this was, even if Emma?s clothes don?t need to be washed today, I?d rather have it done for the week then they needing to be done the day after Dora comes! Same with vacuuming, it didn?t really need it, but I?d like to start fresh instead if needing to do it with 2 kids in a few days!!!

Make sure all outlets are plugs, medicines are locked, door knob covers on and cleaning supplies are locked. When we don?t have a placement we don?t always have these things locked that need to be when we do have a little one!

Anything else: I rushed to get some projects done so I wouldn?t have to worry about them later.

Our kitchen table only has 3 matching chairs. We have 5 more folding ones that do match, but we keep stored. So with a 4th person at the table we have to make sure another chair is out and ready.

Another first for me, I made dinner for the next night! I?d rather make it at 10 PM the day before then when I?m trying to adjust to the new little one, plus my husband is working that night! I know some people have awesome traditions of getting pizza the night they get a placement! It?s fun for your kids, plus then you don?t have to cook!!!

Then.... because things are ever changing. Around the time we were supposed to be getting her, they call and say, oh It's tomorrow! You'd think I'd be happy, but I'm rather annoyed! I was going to go to my friends party tonight, I had sitter for Em and everything. But I canceled on them because of the new placement! Is it too late to ask my sitter to watch her again????
